    Description and origin: Pair of Chinese Fô - Foo dogs made of brown glazed ceramic.

    Imperial guardian lions are a traditional Chinese architectural ornament. The concept originated and became popular in Chinese Buddhism. It features a pair of stylized lions, one male with a ball and one female with a cub. They are thought to protect buildings from harmful spiritual influences and harmful people that might be a threat. They were also used in imperial Chinese palaces and tombs.
